We have canceled Beta 1 of Citavi Team, please read the notes below.

Archived Content:
We are happy to announce the first beta release of Citavi Team, the workgroup version of Citavi.

If you installed the Citavi Team beta before the update in the title, please see the update notes below and download the beta again.

Keep the following in mind when installing a beta of Citavi:
  • As with all pre-release software, do not use a beta version for anything critical. (See notes below.)
  • You can run a beta of Citavi 3 alongside Citavi 2, with one exception: the Picker extensions for Adobe, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
  • If you rely on the Pickers to keep working with Citavi 2, do not install the Pickers from Citavi 3 because they cannot communicate with Citavi 2.

Citavi Team lets multiple users work on a project at the same time. It supports privileges, allowing some users to be "Readers", others "Authors", and giving others no access at all.

Citavi Team is an extension to Citavi Pro and Citavi Free, and requires a separate license to activate. The beta version lets you use a demo license to try the team features.

Release Notes
  • Citavi Team is designed for use on local networks (LANs). It is not compatible with Internet protocols such as FTP or WebDAV, nor does it support sychronization services such as Dropbox.
  • Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are supported to allow remote access to a LAN, but performance can be very slow. We are working to improve performance over slow connections, but are interested in your experiences so far.
  • At this point, we are deliberately not releasing an installer for Citavi Team, because it would overwrite your regular version of Citavi. Instead, it is released as a ZIP archive containing the program files, since this can be installed alongside your regular version.

Installing and Configuring Citavi Team
  1. Download the ZIP archive linked at the end of this article.
  2. Extract the ZIP archive wherever you like, for example, to My Documents\Citavi Team Beta.
  3. Inside that folder, you will find the bin folder.
  4. Make sure your regular version of Citavi is closed — it can't run at the same time.
  5. Start Citavi.exe from the bin folder.
  6. The first time Citavi Team starts, it will report that it is running from that location for the first time and requires you to set its folder for user data. Select a folder, for example the folder in step 1.
Do not select your existing Citavi user data folder with your real projects.
  7. Once the welcome screen comes up, click Team features.
  8. Click Try Citavi Team.
  9. Complete the assistant to finish creating a user group.
  10. Once you've created the user group, you can create or open team projects (and solo projects, as regular non-shared projects are called in Citavi Team). Team projects let you designate users as Readers, Authors, and Project Leaders, and the Authors can make simultaneous changes to the project.
If you want to test Citavi Team with your existing projects, don't open them directly. Instead, please make a copy of a project and put it in the folder for user data you specified in step 6. Do not use this for anything other than testing purposes, because projects opened even once with the Team Beta cannot be opened in the current regular version of Citavi.

If you copy your entire folder for user files, including the Settings folder, do not start projects from the welcome screen, because the Settings include the history of recent items, which means your original project would be edited. If you see your original projects in the welcome screen, first create a new project, then on the Tools menu, click Options, then on the Folders tab, click Clear recent items.

Known Issues
  • No Quick Help is available in English, and many Quick Help texts are missing or incomplete in German. Please do not report this.
  • The first time you open a project created with an earlier version of Citavi, the project file must be updated. For large projects, this can take several minutes, but there is no feedback while this happens (the progress bar may appear to freeze).
  • Using Citavi Team over a VPN can be very slow. Please provide us with feedback about your experiences with this, if you can.
  • The License key window does not yet reflect Citavi Team licenses.

Citavi Team Beta 1 is no longer available.

A fresh start for Citavi Team

Postby Antonio Tejada » 2011-05-11 10:03

Here at Swiss Academic Software, we don't just view beta testing from the perspective of eliminating technical errors. At least equally important is the feedback regarding ease of use.

In Beta 1 of Citavi Team, we introduced the concept of a user group, which is responsible for centrally licensing and managing a team. Initial feedback indicated that while this approach is theoretically sound, it is too complex and hard to use in practice.

Because of the high value we place on usability, we're putting on the brakes and starting afresh. The feature set will remain the same (multiple users working concurrently on a project), but setting up a team and configuring permissions will be radically simplified.

For this reason, we are canceling Beta 1 of Citavi Team. This version will not be developed further. Projects created or opened with Beta 1 of Citavi Team will not be compatible with future beta versions.

Thank you for your understanding. We are confident you will find Beta 2 easier to use, and ask for a bit of patience while we work on it — it won't be long. Thank you!
