Dates on contributions or items in collected work

Postby skittle » 2012-11-08 12:40

System information: [ Citavi Version 3.3, Windows Vista, English, Other browser, MS Office 2007, - ]

Hi,

Is there a way to have different dates for different items in a Collected Work or in a Book, Edited? I've not found anyway to do this, items always seem to inherit the date of the publication. It's quite common though for the items in a collection to have different dates. Could I request a further field, like the Original Publication field that is available for items in Collected Works, Original Publication Date? And then if this date is specified, it could be used in referencing.

Regards

Simon

Hello Simon,

when an article is reprinted in a collection, and you cite from this source, you would have to refer to the publication date of the collection, because that is the version you have read and used. It would be incorrect to cite the original publication if you have not used the original version, since they will probably differ (the pagination will most likely be different, and typos and errors might be corrected without telling).

That said, it is of course important to know the original publication date. Therefore, there is a field for this information in all document type items:

If you cannot see the field in the reference pane, click on More fields and add it.

If this date is shown in the bibliography depends on the citation style. You can of course add the field to your own style.

Patrick

Ah, that's great Patrick, thank you.

I thought the 'Original Publication' field was for the name of the publication, rather than the date first published.

Hello Simon,

if you are not sure what a field means, just click it, and Citavi will tell you:
