Incorrect APA 6th Edition Format for Dissertation

Postby Bill Gumula » 2016-06-27 17:49

I need help correcting the APA 6th edition citation for a dissertation. I am using a thesis reference type. According to Purdue OWL the citations should look like this:

Dissertation, Published
Lastname, F. N. (Year). Title of dissertation (Doctoral dissertation). Retrieved from Name of database. (Accession or Order Number)

Dissertation, Unpublished
Lastname, F. N. (Year). Title of dissertation (Unpublished doctoral dissertation). Name of Institution, Location.

The best I can do in Citavi by entering information in different placeholders is this:
McCrary, M. (2011). Mapping the Road to Instructional Coach Effectiveness: Exploring the Relationship Between Instructional Coaching Efficacy, Practices, and Outcomes (Doctoral dissertation), Retrieved from ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global.

How do I add the accession/order number?
Is there a way to have imported information map to the correct values so I so not have to remember to go in to every one and more information into different blanks to make the citation come out correctly?

Thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated!

Dear Bill,

Thank you very much for your question.

I am not entirely sure what the "Accession or Order Number" is.
I guess that this is the internal number of the reference in the database you used.

For ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, this could be number 3480304.
The probably easiest (but unconventional) way to add this number could be the following:

If you have a DOI or ISBN for your reference, you can input it in the respective field and click on the field name. Citavi will then update the bibliographic information for that reference accordingly.

In all other cases, you would have to take care of the correct mapping yourself.

Please just let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Jana

Jana -

Thank you so much for the response and for some ideas. Since the Accession number has to come at the end of the references list citation it sounds like I need to map a new field for it. Is there a resource that you can point me to that explains how to do this? Or can you assist me here in the forum? I sincerely appreciate the help. I have fallen in love with Citavi and the great support adds one more reason to like it! I like Citavi so much that I have been recommending it to the others in my PhD cohort. Again, thanks for the help!

Dear Bill,

I am glad that I could help you. Thank you so much for recommending Citavi!

You are right: I missed that point, sorry.
Please enter in the field Online address "ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. (3480304)".

This will meet the needs of Purdue OWL´s APA 6th guide.

In case you prefer to map a new field (custom field) you would also have to edit your citation style and create a new component.

To be honest - I feel that this is too much effort.

Best regards,
Jana
